NepalKirk's on Top of The World

Or very close to it! This month Mountain Trek is in Nepal and closing in on Mt. Everest Base Camp. This fitness vacation offers high alpine adventure on one of the biggest mountains in the world. The group has made contact via email to update us on their progress and experiences.

Kirk sent us this photo and said:

"Trekking in the Himalayas is blowing my mind!... Soon to start the Everest Base Camp mission with 8 other MT vets!

Andrea also emailed us with her reflections on Nepal:

"In this country, a big smile can help many things," said Shree, our Nepalese iTrek guide as we veered away from the airport. We head to Kathmandu and the start of our six day journey into some of the most beautiful and pristine mountains of the world. The next day, views of the high Himalaya including Mt. Everest provoke giant "can you believe this?" smiles among our group as we fly into our starting point at Luckla, already high in the mountains. The six ensuing days see us transported into the beautiful valleys, villages and high plateaus of the Kumbu region, home of the Sherpa people and the high trail leading to the base camp of Mt. Everest. Daily hiking of five to six hours with stops for tea and tasty lunches of Dal Bhat, the traditional Nepalese dish of curry and rice, makes for a perfect pace to acclimatize for altitude and enjoy the rich views and culture.   Hiking in clean air in undulating terrain provides cardio and rest cycles throughout the day. By the end we all feel fitter, cleaner, and enriched by this phenomenal place. And Shree was right, a big smile does go a long way in this part of the world.

Get your Feet In Shape for Hiking

So you've seen the pics and you're psyched for fresh mountain air and adventure. Take some time to prep your tender tootsies for high alpine trekking with the following tips and tricks:

  • feetWalking barefoot whenever you can will help you develop the soles and muscles of your feet and give added protection. We practice what we preach on this one! Kirk is well known for trekking sans shoes.
  • If you have callus or corns, avoid those areas cracking by removing excess callus. (A perfect excuse for a pedicure!) Use cream to keep the skin of your feet elastic and moist without removing the needed callus to pad your soles and heel.
  • Keep toenails clipped and trim before going hiking.
  • If parts of your feet are known to develop blisters quickly, you might want to cover them up with moleskin before even taking the first step.
  • Comfy shoes, comfy shoes, comfy shoes!
